What to have ready before you sell a trailer

A buyer will want to know what the trailer weighs, what it can carry and that it is yours to sell. Having that ready makes the advert quicker to write and the viewing shorter.

Copy the weights from the plate. Give the gross weight as the plate shows it. If the plate is missing or unreadable, leave the field blank and say so in the description.
Measure the bed. Give the inside length and width, the measurements a buyer needs to know whether their load fits.
Do not put the serial number in the advert. The form does not ask for it. We suggest leaving it out of the description and showing it to a buyer who comes to see the trailer.
Describe it as it is. Photograph wear and damage and say what needs work. A buyer will see it at the viewing anyway.

Viewings and handing over

Have your proof of purchase to hand. We suggest showing the receipt or invoice from when you bought it, and any service records.
Keep the trailer and its keys until you have been paid. We suggest checking the money has arrived by signing in to your own bank, not from a screenshot or an email the buyer shows you.
Give the buyer a signed receipt and keep a copy. We suggest it names both of you, gives the make, model and serial number, the price and the date.
