Stolen trailer check

Type the serial number from the chassis plate, or the VIN, to see whether it matches a theft report filed with us.

When a trailer is taken, its owner can file a theft report here with the number marked on it. This page checks a number against those reports.

It only holds theft reports filed with us. It does not search any other register, so a number with no match tells you nobody has reported it here, not that the seller owns it.

Check a number

Type it as it is marked on the plate or the chassis.

Which number to type

  • The serial number or VIN. DVLA says the number that identifies a trailer is usually on a metal plate fitted to it or stamped into the chassis. On an Ifor Williams trailer the VIN starts SCK.
  • Read it off the trailer, not the advert. A careful seller leaves the full number out of the advert so it cannot be copied onto another trailer.
  • Spaces and hyphens make no difference. They are taken out before the check, so the number is the same however it is typed.

If the number matches a theft report

Do not pay anything or arrange to collect. Keep a copy of the advert and of your messages with the seller, do not tell the seller what the check found, and call the police on 101. If the trailer is in an advert on this site, report the advert from its page as well.

If no theft report matches

It means no owner has reported that number to us. Before you pay, read the number off the plate and the chassis yourself and check it against the bill of sale or receipt.

Ask for the paperwork that shows how the seller came to own it. Grinding marks, fresh paint or a new weld where the number should be is a reason to stop and ask why.

If your trailer has been taken

Report it to the police first and ask for a crime reference number. Then file a theft report here with the serial number or VIN, so anyone who checks that number on this page is told it matches your report.
